Who can be supported? Who meets goal of R15 eligible student inclusion or improving environment? Technician PD/PI Postdoc Resident/Fellow Undergrad, biology major High school student Masters student MPH student PhD student PharmD student Post bacc 2

“The PD(s)/PI(s) may not be the PD(s)/PI(s) of any active NIH research grant, including another AREA grant, at the time of an AREA award (although he or she may be one of the project personnel for an active NIH grant held by another PD/PI).” (Section III.1) You have 2 separate projects. One is exploratory and fits the R21. One fits the R15. Can you submit them both? Both get fundable scores. Will NIH fund both? Can the R15 switch PIs and be funded? ▫ Can the R15 drop one Multiple PI and be funded? Can you drop to collaborator on R21 and have the R15 awarded? ▫ What if the R21 is Multiple PI? 3

Is Purdue U Terre Haute Eligible? Purdue Univ West Lafayette (main campus) Other Academic is on ineligible list 1.PUTH confers AS in Biology, Dental Hygiene, etc 2.PU West Lafayette confers degrees for PU-K 3.Regents of Purdue University System confer degrees for all Purdue campuses 4.PUTH confers BS in Cytotechnology, Biology, etc ▫ PUK is accredited independently of PU West Lafayette 4

Is State University School of Allied Health Science eligible? Not on ineligible list 1.State University Other Academic is not on ineligible list 2.State University Other Academic is on the ineligible institutions list A.Programs for MPH, BS, MS B.Program for ODT, DPT  All degrees are conferred by University, but faculty must approve. 5

What goes where: Facilities & Other Resources vs. Biosketch PI’s experience supervising students in research Impact on PI of funding R15 Impact on institution (eligible component) of funding R15 How many of the institution’s students went to grad school Description of major equipment 6

Which should you request in your optional Cover Letter? Knowing that R15s can be assigned to a SEP 1.Institute/Center 2.Review Group 3.Specific expertise 4.Specific Reviewers 7

What do you do? You think your research fits well in NINR mission. ▫ They funded 0/22 R15 in FY14 (0%). ▫ But they funded 6/36 R15 in FY13 (16.7%) It’s a stretch, but maybe Specific Aim 2Biii fits NIGMS mission. ▫ They funded 69/328 R15 in FY14 (21%) 8

What belongs in Research Strategy How student will be supervised How student will be taught to do the work How student will be involved Feasibility with respect to student investigators Convey how project will stimulate students to consider NIH-related career Describe student’s coursework Describe student’s seminars, workshops, conferences Describe PI’s teaching philosophy 9

Can collaborators at ineligible institution be included Collaborator, consultant, sub-awardee. Not Multiple PD/PI Majority of work conducted by PI at eligible institution Role should be consistent with AREA goals ▫ Provide research opportunities to students at eligible institution  E.g., for eligible College of Pharmacy, this means pharmacy students ▫ Improve environment of eligible institution  For eligible component, this mean that component 10
