Dewey 590’s Animal Collection Current Status The current size of the collection is 598 books. In several categories, the percentage of use indicates a high demand for books and a only a small selection to choose from. The median age of the collection indicates that there is a need for more up-to-date resources. Specifically, the areas of 591, 597, and 599’s need to be expanded to help teachers meet curriculum needs. Data also shows that it would be beneficial for additional video resources to be added to this collection.

What do the Teachers and Students Need and Want? After working closing with teachers to evaluate resources to meet curricular needs, and analyzing usage data, it is evident that the animals series needs some attention to successfully meet these needs. In order to purchase the resources that give the students the best opportunity for success, funding must be made available. Based on circulation records, this collection is in high demand. Students frequently check out books in this collection and will continue to check out books that are purchased in the future.

What the Experts Say What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it thinks about education. -- Harold Howe, former US Commissioner of Education Sixteen studies conducted since 1993 have shown that students who have a library in their school with a full-time licensed librarian, support staff, and adequate funding for materials and collections, show an increase in achievement on state and national standardized tests! There is a statistically significant relationship between higher reading scores and larger school library budgets for books and electronic resources at the elementary level. School libraries have an important role to play in our future competitiveness in the global economy
