So, In a Nutshell…

What will we learn in this course? (in no particular order)  IT Organizations  What is systems administration? Why is it important?  How are IT shops organized; how they operate  The basics of the Windows and Linux operating systems: How to  Configure and manage them in a corporate environment  Setup and configure services to run on these operating systems  Diagnose, and debug problems with systems  Make different platforms interoperate with each other  The managerial aspects of administering IT  Planning for new systems and services  Conducting a thorough analysis of IT infrastructure, TCO and ROI calculations  Disaster recovery, Data Integrity, Data Centers, Ethics  With plenty of anecdotes and personal experiences from your instructor, of course.

Required Course Materials  The Practice of System and Network Administration: 2 nd Edition, Limoncelli, Hogan, Chalup. ISBN (13): , ISBN (10)  A bus-powered USB Mass Storage Device with a capacity of at least 32GB.  You will store your lab and coursework on this device.

All course content is on blackboard  All of the course content from class lectures and labs are here.  You will hand in your deliverables in class or via as instructed.  Please take the time to get familiar with the blackboard system.

Methods of Evaluation

General policies for student work  Labs and study guides are turned in at the beginning of Tuesday’s Class.  When a out-of-class deliverable is due you must hand it in before 11:59:59PM on its due date.  All work should be an individual effort unless the assignment explicitly states that it is group work.  In-class exams and lab practical must be completed within the allocated class time and on the dates provided. Plan accordingly.  All deliverables are “open book” this means you may use any inanimate resources you need to assist you with answering the questions.  There are no make-ups or late work accepted. All due dates and exam dates are clearly posted on the syllabus.  If you know you will not be anle to turn in a deliverable by the assigned due date, plan on submitting it early. You may make arrangements to submit via under these circumstances.

Grading for Labs and Study Guides  You will be issued one of 3 marks for every lab / study guide:  0 – not complete and not passing  5 – complete but not passing or incomplete and passing  10 – complete and passing  Complete means you finished the entire assessment (answered all the questions)  Passing means you answered more than 70% of the questions correctly.  Answers to the labs and study guides will be posted after they are graded.

Exams and Lab Practical  In-class deliverable; Individual effort  2 Exams, 2 Lab Practicals  100 points each exam 50 points each practical for 300 points total.  Exam dates posted on syllabus.  All dates are firm so plan accordingly.  Exams are a culmination of lectures to date.  Lab Practical is a culmination of lab work to date. You will have to apply what you’ve learned in the labs to complete the lab practical.

Project Overview  Out of class deliverable; some in-class deliverables  Write a blog posting reviewing a product or technology related to the course content.  100 points total  Draft due on 3/11  Article due on 5/4  Details will be posted to blackboard.

Class Participation and Attendance  Attendance is required for participation. If you’re not present, than you cannot participate.  You are expected to attend and participate in every class.  Please bring your SUID card to class. Attendance is taken electronically, and on random days.  Please arrive on-time. If you’re not present during attendance gathering, then you are absent.  I appreciate knowing when you will not attend class, but keep in mind there are no excused absences, since it is a participation grade.  Once you have completed the lab you may leave.

Weekly Course Structure  Before Tuesday:  Read the assigned chapters from text  Read instructor’s notes  Complete study guide for topic  On Tuesday  Meet in Class (rm 021)  Hand in study guide and previous topic’s lab.  Discussion, Demo, and Q&A for topic.  Before Thursday  Review the lab requirements  Read assigned readings for lab., and review the lab itself  On Thursday  Meet in the Lab (rm 013)  Work on lab, instructor and TA assist where needed.  Complete by Next Tuesday at the latest
