We are going to read a poem. Do you know what a poem is? Elements of poetry: – imagery, imagery –diction, diction –sound, –metaphor, metaphor –theme, theme –saying something new

Imagery: the idea that an image, presented on its own.

Diction: choice of words uses the least number of words to finish the task, each word is important and must be chosen as the exact word

Metaphor is a comparison between two things : help us see something in a new or more meaningful way E.g. The moon tonight is full and bright. The stars are shining high. A falling star flies before my eyes. I make a wish as it goes by. The darkness creeps But it’s time to sleep. I say “ Goodnight “ to the sky.

Theme: the purpose of the poem. What the poet needed to say. e.g. Five little monkeys went to play. Out in the park one sunny day. When Uncle Baboon said, “ On your way!” All the little monkeys said, “ Can we stay?” So uncle baboon said, “ Oh, okay! I do like to see my monkeys play”
