What are the best locations for wind turbines in Japan? Shinichi Hongo

Wind turbine Generally, propeller type wind turbines are used for generation use. Wind turbines are not popular in Japan. The capacity of wind powered generators is about 2.1GW in 2009 in Japan. 2

Required conditions Wind velocity –6 m/s or more (annual average) Location –Large place is needed to build wind turbines. Transport route 3

Required conditions Onshore or offshore areas ? 4

Negative effect Wind turbines make noises. –Wind noise, moter noise etc. Low-frequency sound is maked. We cannot hear Low-frequency sound, but it has negative impacts on us. –Headache, insomnia etc. 5

The best location The best locations are in the offing of Japan. Reasons –Better wind speeds are available offshore compared to on land. –We don’t have to worry about the problem of the noises and securing of location. 6

Wind conditions in Japan 7 Annual average wind velocity of offshore around Japan is 6 – 9 m/s everywhere. (60 m above the sea) >9m/s 8 ~ 9m/s 7 ~ 8m/s 6 ~ 7m/s 5 ~ 6m/s 4 ~ 5m/s <4m/s Annual average wind velocity

Conclusion Offshore areas are the best locations. Wind turbines are not popular in Japan. Japan should spread wind turbines to solve the energy problems. 8
