Bell Ringer: Jan. 29, 2015 What are the five sense of the nervous system? Which one takes in the most information? Extra: To the best of your knowledge, explain how each sense works. Which senses are chemical in nature and which are physical in nature?

Nervous System Part 2 S7L2. Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. c. Explain that cells are organized into tissues, tissues into organs, organs into systems, and systems into organisms. d. Explain that tissues, organs, and organ systems serve the needs cells have for oxygen, food, and waste removal. e. Explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body (i.e., digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, control, and coordination, and for protection from disease).

E.Q. What are the structures and functions of the nervous system? Functions: It receives information about what is happening inside and outside of your body. It directs the way in which your body responds to this information.

Parts of the Brain

Just the basics

Cerebrum The largest part of the brain Receives input from the senses Controls movement Carries out complex mental processes such as learning and remembering.

Cerebellum 2 nd largest part of the brain Main function is to coordinate muscle action Helps maintain balance Coordination, precision, accurate timing

Brain Stem Between the cerebellum and the spinal cord Controls involuntary actions Regulates breathing and heart rate

The Human Eye Cornea: The clear tissue that covers the front of the eye. The light strikes this area of the eye first. Pupil: The opening through which the light enters the eye. There is fluid between the cornea and the eye. Iris: A circular structure that surround the eye. It controls the amount of light entering the eye. It varies in color. (genetics) Lens: A flexible structure that focuses light. (Similar to the lens of a camera) Retina: After the lens, the light passes through jelly-like fluid to the retina. The retina is a layer of receptor cells that line the back of the eye.

Problems with Eye Sight Nearsightedness – can see nearby objects Problem - Image comes into focus in front of the retina Corrections – Concave lens makes image focus on the retina. Farsightedness – can see distant object clearly. Problem – Images comes into focus behind the retina. Correction – Convex lens makes image focus on the retina.

The Human Ear: 3-Main Parts Outer Ear – Sound enters through the outer ear and reaches the eardrum. Middle Ear – Vibrations pass from the hammer to the anvil and stirrup.  Eardrum – a membrane that vibrates when sound strikes it. Inner Ear – Vibrations in the cochlea cause nerve cells to transmit signals to the brain.  Cochlea – a snail-shaped tube that is lined with receptor cells that respond to sound.
