Mother’s of the Bible “My son, keep your father's command, And do not forsake the law of your mother.” {Proverbs 6:20} Title Slide: Mother’s of the Bible…Proverbs 6:20…

Introduction How did Mother’s Day begin here in the United States? President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution in Congress on May 9, 1914, recommending that the federal government observe Mother's day. The next year, the president was authorized to proclaim an annual holiday. Though this is a special one time event each year, I think that we all should honor our mothers on a daily basis! Introduction: How Mother day was started in our country as a national holiday…

Introduction Few thoughts about mothers: A mother is one who will nourish, love and care for her child. A mother is a night watchman as she keeps an ear out for her child’s cry at night and will immediately spring out of bed to comfort her child. A mother is a doctor and nurse all rolled into one. No matter what kind of boo boo a child has, only a mother’s kiss can make it better. Introduction: Few thoughts about mothers…

Introduction Few thoughts about mothers: A mother is a time keeper as she keeps up all the events in her child’s life and she makes sure they make it to them on time. She doubles as taxi driver or chauffer whatever it takes to get their child where they need to go. She is a chef and makes meals that are best for her children. Introduction: Few thoughts about mothers…

Introduction Few thoughts about mothers: A mother is a councilor and works with her children’s emotions during difficult times. A mother is a referee when it comes to disputes between her children. A mother is a great encourager and one who gives her child what they need to succeed. Introduction: Few thoughts about mothers… Although overworked and underpaid, Mother doesn't complain. She would work her fingers to the bone for her children. She'd come to their rescue, no matter what the cause. These are, after all, her God-given 'talents' to take and use for the glory of God. HE expects Mother to raise and nurture her 'children' to become the best they can be in this world, and equip them for what is needed to get to the other side!

Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12—5th of the 10 Commandments…

Ephesians 6:1-3 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” NT Commandment for children Eph.6:1-3…

Sarah—Abraham’s wife The impatient mother God made a promise to Abraham Genesis 12:1-3 She decided God needed help Genesis 16:1-4 However, this was not God’s plan Genesis 17:17-21 Sarah turned against Hagar Genesis 21:9-21 Sarah’s—Abraham Wife—Genesis 16-21: Sarah probably regretted the day she thought this plan up for all the trouble it caused! Lesson: Don’t take matters into your own hands—trust the Lord, lean on His understand and follow His course—all work out for our good! (Rom.8:28)

Hannah—Godly Mother Hannah trusted the Lord Had no children and longed for them 1 Samuel 1:1-7 Pray to God with a vow 1 Samuel 1:8-11 Keep her vow—return back to God 1 Samuel 1:24-28 Hannah had other children 1 Samuel 2:20,21 Hannah—a godly mother—1 Sam.1.2: Hannah thought the Lord’s help. Blessed her with Samuel gave him back into the Lord’s service. Children are blessings—God desires them back into His family! (Eph.6:4)

Jochebed—Moses’ Mother Jochebed willing to save her child Married to a Levi Exodus 2:1-2 Hid him for 3 months Exodus 3:3-10 Raised as Pharaoh's grandson Exodus 3 As his nurse taught Him about God Hebrews 11:23-25 Jochebed willing to save her child—Exodus 2,3: Important to see the love she had for the child and the need she saw to teach Moses about his relationship to God early in his life—man becomes a central figure in the God’s plan to save sinful men! Proverbs 6:22; Eccl.12:1 Difference was taught between ways of the “world” and the “ways of God” Mothers need to be consistent not just with their teaching but manner of living!

Naomi—love for daughter-in-law Naomi example of love Daughters-in-law desire to stay Ruth 1:16,17 Ruth goes into the fields Ruth 2:1-6 Naomi gave advice to secure life for Ruth Ruth 3:1-10 Boaz marries Ruth-- in Jesus’ lineage Ruth 4 Naomi example of love—Ruth: Important to see the love she had her daughters (the wife of her deceased sons) and the love they had for her! Must have been the wonderful example she say while trying to remain faithful to the Lord.

Conclusion “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” We live in a very wicked world—children need love, guidance, patience, and to be taught about the need for God in their lives. Godly mothers are a blessing from God. Children need to thank God for their godly mothers and the sacrifices they make for their lives. Mothers have a sobering and important role in the raising of their children—may their tribe increase! Summary—Invitation…
