Metabolism What is Metabolism? Two categories: Catabolism (dissimilation): pathways to breakdown organic substrates (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins) for metabolic energy- Growth and Maintenances. Anabolism (assimilation): pathways for the formation of cellular components through two steps- Production of intermediate compounds (amino aid, monosaccharides, isoprenoides, nucleotides). Assembly of compounds to more complex forms (proteins, polysaccharides, lipids, nucleic acids).
Carbohydrate Catabolism Glycolysis. Krebs cycle. Electron transport chain (ETC)- “Respiration”. Fermentation.
