Warm-Up Monday, August 24, 2015 Write a few sentences in which you discuss some of your views on education: What does it mean to you to do “well” in school? What are some of your worries and hopes for the coming school year? What is the “point” of school and classes like Literature or World History?

Tuesday, August 25, 2015 Copy the Vocab and respond to the question… Vocab: Geography- From the Greek meaning “to write about the Earth”. As a modern academic discipline, geography is concerned with the analysis of the physical and human characteristics of the Earth’s surface from a spatial perspective. Question: What does Human Geography sound like it is concerned with to you? What kinds of things do you expect to study in this course?

Wednesday, August 26, 2015 Vocab: Spatial Analysis- The study done by geographers to examine the distribution of different types of phenomena and ask why and how certain phenomena come to occur in certain places. Question: Perform some “spatial analysis” on the photo in the next slide. What “phenomena” do you observe? Do you have any guesses as to where in the world this is? Why do you think it was done?

Thursday, August 27, 2015 Vocab: Cartography – The science of making maps – a map maker is a cartographer. Question: The following map was created using the photo website, flickr. The Red areas are where tourists have taken photos, the blue are where locals take photos and the yellow could be either. Try and do some spatial analysis on the map. What does it tell you about locals and tourists in Vegas? Does it tell you anything else?

Exit Ticket Why do most maps suffer from some type of distortion?

Friday, August 28, 2015 Vocab: Projection- The system used to transfer locations from Earth’s surface to a flat map. Question: What is the difference between a large scale map and a small scale map?

Exit Ticket Describe what a cartogram is and what they are useful for.
