Problem Statement Which paper towel is the strongest?

Variables Constant Variables: Water Pennies trays Manipulated Variable: Bounty, Bounty Basic, Brawny, Sparkle, School, Publix Responding Variable: The amount of pennies the paper towels hold

Hypothesis If we test to see which paper towel is the strongest, then Brawny will be the strongest.

Materials Brawny Trays Sparkle Water Bounty Pennies Bounty Basic School Publix

Procedures Two people hold each end of the paper towel. Gently and quickly place the pennies on the paper towel until it breaks. Do not include the last penny that breaks the paper towel. Repeat the experiment 2 more times and record the data.

Data Number of Pennies Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average Bounty Basic 254 348 240 281 Sparkle 214 237 200 217 School 91 77 88 85 Bounty 171 155 193 Publix 64 74 23 54 Brawny 212 305 365 294

Results The results showed that the paper towel brand that held the least amount of pennies was Publix which averaged 54 pennies. Next was school with 85, Bounty with 193, Sparkle with 217, and Bounty Basic with 281. Brawny held the most with an average of 294 pennies.

Conclusion Our hypothesis was supported by this experiment. Brawny held the most pennies. It is possible that some of us may have miscounted. Some groups counted much faster than others so perhaps that affected the results. Maybe we could repeat the experiment to see if we get the same results. We were surprised that Bounty came in third and that Publix held less than the school.

Application This experiment applies to daily life because now we know which paper towel is the strongest. We can tell our parents which one to buy from the grocery store. We wonder what would happen if we used quarters or legos, or if we all counted at the same pace.

Abstract The purpose of our project was to find out which paper towel was the strongest. We were curious. We thought that Brawny would be the strongest. We used pennies and water to test the strength of each paper towel. Brawny was the strongest. Publix was the weakest. Our hypothesis was correct because Brawny won. From now on we will buy Brawny because it’s the strongest of all the paper towels we tested. We could improve our project by making sure that everyone counts the pennies at the same pace.
