Wyn Cudlip BNSC/QinetiQ Presentation to WGISS24 DLR, October 2007 UK Support for GEO

CEOS WGISS 24 Meeting, DLR, October 2007 UK GEO Activities UK Official Point of Contact for GEO is Dr. Ruth Kelman who works for the Department of Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra). This recognises the GEO emphasis on supporting Applications. Other UK Organisations involved including: –BNSC – British National Space Centre –NERC – National Environmental Research Council –UK Met Office – covering climate (GCOS) and weather issues Support for GEO currently not well co-ordinated. BNSC support mainly routed through CEOS WGISS & WGCV.

CEOS WGISS 24 Meeting, DLR, October 2007 BNSC supported projects Sea Surface Temperature Measurement Continuity. Sensor Web Development (OSCAR). Co-operation with Argentina on exploitation of L-band SAR data. Contribution to the GEOSS Clearing House Development. Support for leader of GEO DEM Interoperability Task (DA-07-01). Update to UCL ICEDS EO Information System as contribution to GEOSS.

CEOS WGISS 24 Meeting, DLR, October 2007 Conclusions NERC supporting UK academic research, currently evaluating GEO support –Includes support for GOOS (e.g. Argo profiling float programme Defra supporting UK input to GCOS (via UK Met Office). BNSC supporting small projects contributing to Geo Tasks. Also providing support for Charter for Disaster management. And support for IGOS (e.g. Geo-hazards) – to me integrated into GEO Improved co-ordination of GEO related activities being planned.
