Manuela Campanelli The University of Texas at Brownsville GriPhyN NSF Project Review January 2003 Chicago Education & Outreach Overview

229 Jan 2003 Manuela Campanelli, UTB GriPhyN Education and Outreach Program Goals Communicate the ideas of the computational and data grids to a diverse community of faculty and students, as well as the public at large. Incorporate faculty, K-12, undergrad and beginning graduate students at other institutions (in particular MSI) into GriPhyN research. Engage all GriPhyN senior personnel to lecture and mentor E/O activities, facilitated by an outreach coordinator anchored at The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB).

329 Jan 2003 Manuela Campanelli, UTB Outreach Strategy Develop a prototype outreach program at one site: –Critical mass of students and faculty required –Integrated research effort in CS and physics: UTB part of the LIGO production grid Extend this prototype to other MSIs –Increased MSI participation with iVDGL Engage all GriPhyN researchers to do outreach –Give talks, mentor more students, etc Work with other E/O programs –Share ideas, activities, workshops, etc Build external outreach component: –Web page development –Contact with Press, CS and Physics communities

429 Jan 2003 Manuela Campanelli, UTB GriPhyN/iVDGL Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) UT Brownsville (UTB) – Hispanic College and University, Brownsville (Texas) – 10,000 students, 90% Hispanic American >> 20, 000 within 5 years – Major role in LIGO research (LSC institution) – Computational resources: 96-node Linux cluster – iVDGL Tier 3 center – New resources: NASA University Research Center (URC) for Gravitational Wave Astronomy

529 Jan 2003 Manuela Campanelli, UTB Extending prototype to other MSI Hampton University (HU) – Historically Black College & University, Hampton (Virginia) – 6000 students, mostly African American – QuarkNet outreach center – ATLAS research University Center – iVDGL Tier 3 center Salish Kootenai College (SKC) – Tribal College, Pablo (Montana) – 2000 students, 80% native American – LSC institution (LIGO research) – iVDGL Tier 3 center
