If Vicki weren’t such a boring teacher, I wouldn’t sleep during class.

 Present unreal conditionals have two clauses  A clause is a group of words that have a subject and verb.  Two Clauses  If clause-states the condition  Result clause-states the result

 How many clauses do present unreal conditional statements have?  What is a clause?  Name the two clauses in a present unreal conditional.

 If clause- If + Subject + past form of verb  Ex. If Abraham didn’t ignore Vicki,  Result clause- Subject + would + base form of verb  Ex. he would understand present unreal conditionals.  If Abraham didn’t ignore Vicki, he would understand present unreal conditionals.

 How do you form the if clause?  How do you form the result clause?  What is the if clause in this sentence?  What is the result clause in this sentence?  Ex. Maren would make a wonderful teacher if she had more patience.

 Present unreal conditionals talk about something that is untrue, impossible, or imagined.  They describe the opposite of what is true.  If teenagers went to sleep before 10:00 PM, they would be more awake in school.

 What do present unreal conditionals describe?  Somethings that is……..  The opp…………

 Use would + past verb to describe a definite result  Ex. If Nimfa didn’t have such a hectic lifestyle, she would sleep better.  Use might or could to describe a possible result  Ex. If students knew about the dangers of sleep-derivation, they might take their sleep habits more seriously.

 Why do we use “would” in a present unreal conditional?  Why do we use “might” or “could” in a present unreal conditional?

 To make a question, use question word order in the main clause  Ex. If you were sleep-deprived, would you be able to tell?  The if clause is not needed if the condition is understood by the listener.  How would you be able to tell?

 How do you make a question using the present unreal conditional?  Make an example question present unreal conditional.

 For the verb to be, use “were” for all subjects  Examples:  If I were rich, I would open my own school.  If she were rich, she would buy a new BMW.  If you were rich, what would you do?  If Ohlone College were the best school in the bay area, many students would want to go there.

 Write a present unreal conditional sentence using the verb to be.  Write a present unreal conditional using a question.  Write a present unreal conditional using would.  Write a present unreal conditional using might.
