Promoting Diversity In Medicine

EVMS Proposal Eastern Virginia Medical School supports the mission of the Nebraska-Virginia Alliance in increasing the numbers of traditionally underrepresented groups in the medical and health professions to advance and improve education, patient care, and research.

EVMS Proposal Objectives Establish BS/MD programs with each of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Virginia. EVMS currently has programs with Hampton University and Norfolk State University Provide summer research experiences each year for up to four students interested in academic medicine and/or biomedical research Establish an EVMS Alliance Scholarship Seek faculty exchange partnerships for minority faculty teaching in the basic sciences, as well as collaborative partnerships in research

Criteria for BS/MD Program Second Semester Sophomore SAT  1200 (minimum of 1150 considered) 3.4 College GPA Non-academic factors volunteer experience demonstrated leadership health care exposure

Criteria for Continued Eligibility in BS/MD Program Completion of the prerequisite science courses for admission to EVMS 1 year of Biology 1 year of General Chemistry 1 year of Organic Chemistry 1 year of Physics Maintenance of an overall and science GPA of not less than 3.25 Satisfactory annual reviews by Pre-Health Advisory Committee Participation in extracurricular activities, including health care exposure Students with SAT scores of > 1200 (1150 considered) will NOT be required to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) for admission to EVMS

Summer Research Experiences 10 – 12 weeks summer research experiences for up to four rising seniors/graduate students Students required to meet eligibility requirements specified by research division Application process coordinated through the Coordinator of Minority Affairs and the Director of research programs Stipends provided by EVMS, funded research programs, and support from the Alliance (approx. $3,000 per student, plus housing for non Hampton Roads residents)
