Community Service America’s Second Harvest Food Bank of South Georgia By: Michael Jeschke

America’s second harvest food bank of south Georgia America's Second Harvest is the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. The America's Second Harvest mission is to feed hungry people by soliciting and distributing food and grocery products through a nationwide network of certified affiliate food banks and to educate the public about the nature of and solutions to the problem of hunger in America

Their Mission The mission of America's Second Harvest of South Georgia, Inc. is to end hunger in South Georgia To ensure that every community that relies on the services of America's Second Harvest of South Georgia, Inc. is adequately assisted in the fight against hunger

The first day This is the first day when I learned what the food bank was all about. Here I am watching a video on how to look for damaged items and how to repair them properly.

Jobs I Did Sorting various food items Loading trucks up for distribution Stocking Shelves

These are the food items that I sorted into two groups - edible and non-edible.

The Warehouse The warehouse holds many food items, where they are set up for distribution This is where I did most of my community service

Loading Up for Distribution Helping to load the trucks made it much easier for the employees to accomplish other things that were needed to be done. I had to look for the items and then put them on the pallets and then load them up.

Stocking Shelves In the warehouse there are shelves that contain food and drinks. It is very well organized and while I was there I had to restock the shelves which allowed the employees to prepare some food

Some programs the food bank provides Manna Truck -Taking surplus product and fresh produce into community drop points for distribution to those in need by an authorized food bank agency Community Soup Kitchen The Valdosta Food Bank partnered with the Community Soup Kitchen in January, The Food Bank now provides all the food used by the kitchen which feeds 200 people daily Kids Café- Provides meals to children through after school feeding programs

The importance of community service I think that community service is a great thing. It was enjoyable working at the food bank, I also knew that the work that I did would benefit some people who are less fortunate than I am I had fun working at the food bank and I would probably go back on my own time
