The Issue of Diaoyu Islands and Rational Solution made by Chai Guodong on Sep 28, 2012

1 Component Islands and Location Diaoyu Islands consist of Diaoyu Island, Huangwei Island, Chiwei Island, Nanxiao Island,Beixiao Island and 3 reefs. They cover a total area of 6.3 square kilometers. Among them, Diaoyu Island, with an area of 4.3 square kilometers, is the biggest one, which is about 362 meters above sea level. All the islands are long-term uninhabited.

1 Component Islands and Location The coordinate of Diaoyu Islands Latitude 25°40′ ~ 26° North Longitude 123° ~ 124°34 ′ East Wenzhou Fuzhou Keelung Diaoyu Islands 356km 385km 190km

2 The Value and Importance Diaoyu Islands have great strategic significance and military value. According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, if Japan possessed Diaoyu Islands, it would rob China of territorial sea of 200 thousand square kilometers, which would incur some serious chain losses of China.

2 The Value and Importance If Japan occupied Diaoyu Islands we would lose the fishing waters around Diaoyu Islands. What’s more unfortunate, we would lose a large area of mining area. Years for Japan to consume PetroleumGasNickelManganeseCobalt

2 The Value and Importance The first chain of islands mean a series of islands occupied by our potential enemy countries, of which they would make use to siege China on the sea in case of war. Once Diaoyu Islands were lost, they would be brought into the first chain by enemies, so that the first chain would be pushed west and we would lose a large area of buffer used to resist invasion.

3 Diaoyu Islands belong to China The first record concerning Diaoyu Island dates back to Sui Dynasty. Diaoyu Island was called Gaohua Island then. In Song Dynasty, its name was changed to Fishing Island( Diaoyu Island), because skipjacks could be fished easily on the sea around the island. In Ming Dynasty, Diaoyu Island was definitely and formally recorded for the first time. Chinese was the first nation to discover, name, and exploit Diaoyu Islands 1403, in Ming Dynasty

3 Diaoyu Islands belong to China All the historic documentaries of China, Japan, and Loochoo( which was annexed by Japan in 1879) in Ming and Qing Dynasty, indicate that Diaoyu Islands belong to China. And there is not a single word that says Diaoyu Islands belong to Loochoo or Japan. Unfortunately, because of China’s defeat in the war against Japan in the year 1895, Diaoyu Islands together with Taiwan were ceded to Japan in accordance with the unequal treaty of Maguan. Loochoo

3 Diaoyu Islands belong to China In the year 1945, as Japanese admitted Poststam Declaration and surrendered, World War 2 came to the end. And Poststam Declaration specifies Diaoyu Islands should be returned to China. However, China was so weak that we had no ability to take control of Diaoyu Islands. Actually, they had been controlled by America until they were illegally transferred to Japan in China government never admitted the so-called transfer. Original Article of Postsam Declaration

4 Not the Time to Declare War The liberation of Diaoyu Islands depends on the joint operations of navy and air force. China doesn’t fear any enemy on the land, but China’s navy is really very weak. It fades next to American navy, and even Japanese navy. Chinese navy has the following weak points, despite of the new acceptance of Liaoning aircraft-carrier: The lack of experience in sea battle, especially far away from the coast. The lack of the defense ability of anti-craft, anti- submarine, and anti-sea mine. The lack of advanced large warships.

4 Not the Time to Declare War The real power we have to face is America, it stands behind and sponsors Japan and Philippines. If we declared war to Japan, America would probably launch an invasion from South Sea through Philippines. As we all known, China navy is still not strong enough to fight a war far off the coast with the strongest navy. So what we can do is just waiting, until Chinese navy is powerful enough.

5 Rational Attitude to Japanese products Rather than boycott Japanese products, we should replace them with domestic products of better quality, lower price, and better after-service. That requires the domestic corporations to become more creative and strength management. Beating, smashing, and looting, are not behaviors of patriots. On the contrary, those who did these are criminals of Chinese people.

We are sure to liberate Taiwan, Diaoyu Islands, and South China sea in the near future. Thanks for listening !
