  This battle was fought on June 25 th, 1876 near the Little Bighorn River in Montana Territory.  It was fought between federal troops led by Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer and Indians led by Sitting Bull. Battle at Little Bighorn

  The cause of the Battle at Little Bighorn was Indian tribes missing a federal deadline to move to reservations. This made the U.S. Army dispatched to confront them. Causes

  Indian: Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull  American: George A. Custer Leaders

  This battle was the greatest Indian victory and the worst U.S. Army defeat in the long Plains Indian War.  It is known as the most famous of all contacts between the Indians and the Americans.  Custer drew near the camp and decided to press on ahead rather than wait for reinforcements.   Custer did not expect the amount of Indian soldiers that were fighting against them.  Every man in Custer’s 7 th Calvary was killed in battle.  This event was known as Custer’s Last Stand. Custer’s Last Stand

  The slaughter of Custer and his men outraged many white Americans and confirmed their image of the Indians as wild and bloodthirsty.  It made whites more aware of the power that the Indians had.  It made the U.S. government increase its efforts to subdue the tribes.  The United States crushed the spirit of the Indian.   This battle denied the entire premise of Manifest Destiny.  Due to the Indians defeating the Americans, the entire religious basis for the settlement of the west was challenged. Impact on Western Settlement
