Quantity of Products in OIML Recommendation R87 Quantity of Products in Pre-packages

OIML Recommendation R87 Established by OIML Recommendation (R) Model regulation for determining the quantity of product in pre-packages The OIML issues several categories of publications: •International Recommendations, which are intended as model regulations for a number of categories of measuring instruments, and which OIML Member States are morally obliged to implement as far as possible; •International Documents, which are informative and are intended for guidance purposes; and •other publications such as Vocabularies, Guides, Basic Publications and Expert Reports.

R87 Scope To verify the quantity of product in pre-packages Sampling Procedures Sampling Plans To be used by Legal metrology officials This Recommendation specifies the: • Legal metrology requirements for prepackaged products (also called prepackaged commodities or prepackaged goods) labeled in predetermined constant nominal quantities of weight, volume, linear measure, area, or count; and • Sampling plans and procedures for use by legal metrology officials in verifying the quantity of product in prepackages. Note: The sampling plans are not for use in the quantity control processes of prepackagers.

Also included is a mandatory Annex on misleading prepackages.

Terminology Pre-packaged product Single item for presentation as such to a consumer, consisting of a product and the packing material into which it was put before being offered for sale and in which the quantity of product has a predetermined value, whether the packing material encloses the product completely or only partially, but in any case in such a way that the actual quantity of product cannot be altered without the packing material either being opened or undergoing a perceptible modification. 2.11 Prepackaged product definition ex R87
