Presentation transcript:

 Draw a water well in the ground

 Show how water gets into the well AQUIFER: Saturated rock and sediment that water can flow through

 List places where this groundwater comes from

 Predict what happens as you take too much water out of the well.

 How can we extract more water from the well when the groundwater level has dropped? RECHARGE DRILL DEEPER

 Draw a well that is near the ocean. Indicate what you think the groundwater looks like between the ocean and the well. OCEAN

 Take your model of a well near the ocean.  Slowly pour a small amount of the blue ocean water on the opposite end of the well.  Draw water up through your well. Collect the water.  As water is drawn from the well, predict what will happen. WELL Ocean Area Pour BLUE WATER HERE

 Draw what happens to the fresh and ocean groundwater as water is continually drawn up the well. OCEAN Saltwater intrusion: movement of saltwater into freshwater aquifer

 Saltwater is approaching your water wells  You have been hired to come up with a solution!!!!

 You and your team will give a 5 minute PowerPoint presentation to the class  Consider ◦ Cost ◦ Feasibility (convenience) ◦ Community priorities ◦ Reliability ◦ Aesthetics ◦ Social/cultural/environmental impacts ◦ Timeline/schedule

 The class (“city counsel”) will vote on the best solution for the city
