There are 5 basic rules to form the comparatives and superlatives.

1.one syllable adjectives “–er than” and “ the –est. “ fast faster than the fastest

2. If the adjectives ends in a single consonant after a single vowel the consonant is doubled before adding –er and –est.  Fat fatter than the fattest
