Setting The Secret Character

setting On it’s most basic level, setting is the time and place of the action of a story. –For Example: Macbeth takes place in Scotland in the past

Setting In addition to the when and where of a story, setting also addresses the atmosphere of the story. –The atmosphere is a mix of location and variable circumstances, such as personalities present, the conflict, time of day, season, and even the weather.~

Setting The when and where are important because they affect the values and behaviors of the characters and the color of the story. –For example: –The witches prophesy precludes Macbeth’s victories in battle. The fact that he learns of this on a barren heath makes the reader wonder if it is evil.

Setting The atmosphere supports and compliments the conflict and characters and helps to convey the story’s meaning. –The dark setting in combination with Lady Macbeth’s brutal personality help move Macbeth toward his greedy downfall. What might a theme be?

Setting Setting Checklist: What is the physical location? –What does it look like? When does the story take place? –What difference does it make to the story? What details help you to visualize the setting?~

Setting Setting Checklist: –Can you describe the atmosphere? How is the l ighting ? What are the dominant colors ? How are the people behaving ? How are they dressed ? What is the weather like? What is the mood like?~

Setting look for: –Visual Clues to the lay of the land –Names of plants and animals This can connect a story to a specific region. –Loaded words that influence the reader’s perception –Personification-giving human characteristics or behaviors to inhuman things. ~ ~
