Overview  Screening for Non-Communicable Disease  Four Criteria for an Ideal Screening Program  In the Footnotes  Testing  Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs)  Genetic Testing

Screening for Non- Communicable Disease  Completed when individuals are asymptomatic  Three screenings recommended at least once a year for everyone: 1. Cholesterol 2. Blood pressure 3. Blood sugar  Other screenings are done based on risk.

Four Criteria for an Ideal Screening Program 1. The disease produces substantial death and/or disability. 2. Early detection is possible and improves outcome. 3. There is a feasible testing strategy for screening. 4. Screening is acceptable in terms of harms, costs, and patient acceptance.

In the Footnotes  Reference interval  Sensitivity  Specificity

Testing  Sequential or two-stage testing  Simultaneous or parallel testing

Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs)  Determines the number of life-years saved by an intervention  Usually has a monetary value attached to it

Genetic Testing  Genetic prevention  Genetic detection prior to disease  Gene-environmental protection  Genotypic-based screening for early disease
