INJECTION PHASE 04/09/20092 R. Alemany (BE/OP/LHC) LHC Experiments Handshake

INJECTION PHASE LHCALICEATLASCMSLHCbLHCf BEAM MODE = SETUP: pre-injection plateau and injection plateau no beam WARNING (sent ~ 10 minutes before the injection) PREPARE -BCM operational - All ALICE subdetectors in safe mode, i.e. reduced HV and nominal LV for electronics - ZDC out - BCM and V0 operational PREPARE - BCM/BLM operational -SCT/pixel/muon STANDBY - Roman Pots out - Once everything OK manual turn of the key to INJECTION PERMIT = TRUE PREPARE - Detector preparing for injection: HV off ( only some subdetors) - BCM/BLM operational - Once everything OK INJECTION PERMIT = TRUE (can be manual or automatic) PREPARE -ECS prepares for injection PREPARE -Detectors go to safe mode, i.e. power off - The LHCf injection permit is software LHCf -> DIP -> cmw - >SIS - Once LHCf is safe software injection permit = true IMMINENT (sent ~ 3-4 minutes before the injection. Once IMMINENT is sent, we guarantee that the LHC RF timing is stable and the detectors can switch to the LHC timing) READY Once everything OK, INJECTION PERMIT = TRUE (manual, i.e. OPERATOR command which is active only if ALICE= SAFE.AND. ALICE HANDSHAKE = READY) READY Once everything ready, automatically INJECTION PERMIT = TRUE (when going to READY) READY READY (After the experiments and LHC are ready for injection we’ll take some time to do TRANSFER LINE SETUP before changing the mode to INJECTION PROBE BEAM) BEAM MODE = INJECTION PROBE BEAM OR INJECT AND DUMP OR CIRCULATE AND DUMP BEAM MODE = INJECTION SETUP BEAM (WITH BEAM DUMP), INJECTION PROBE BEAM and INJECTION PHYSICS BEAM … once the injection is finished OKINJECTION PERMIT = FALSE (automatic) STANDBY VETO INJECTION PERMIT = FALSE (see next slide ) VETO Whenever the HV ON INJECTION PERMIT = FALSE VETO INJECTION PERMIT = FALSE VETO

ATLAS injection permit is removed automatically if: – BCM/BLM not operational – SCT/Pixel/ muons on running voltage – Roman Pots IN – STABLE BEAM FLAG = TRUE – Post Mortem event received ATLAS injection permit can be removed manually (ACR button) if: – Abnormal beam conditions are observed during injection 04/09/20094 R. Alemany (BE/OP/LHC) LHC Experiments Handshake

ADJUST PHASE LHCALICEATLASCMSLHCbLHCf BEAM MODE = STABLE BEAMS OR UNSTABLE BEAMS WARNING (sent ~ 10 minutes before the adjust) PREPARE - All ALICE subdetectors go to safe mode - ZDC out PREPARE -ATLAS subdetectors go to safe mode - Roman Pots out PREPARE - CMS subdetectors go to safe mode PREPARE - LHCb subdetectors go to safe mode PREPARE -Detector goes to safe mode IMMINENT (sent ~ 3 minutes before the adjust) READY READY BEAM MODE = ADJUST Once ADJUST is done OK STANDBY VETO Notes: 1. From ADJUST to BEAM DUMP no handshake is needed because the detectors are already in safe mode. 04/09/20095 R. Alemany (BE/OP/LHC) LHC Experiments Handshake

BEAM DUMP PHASE LHCALICEATLASCMSLHCbLHCf BEAM MODE = STABLE BEAMS (and whenever possible UNSTABLE BEAMS, i.e. if not an emergency dump) WARNING (sent ~ 10 minutes before the dump) PREPARE - All ALICE subdetectors go to safe mode - ZDC out PREPARE -ATLAS subdetectors go to safe mode - Roman Pots out PREPARE - CMS subdetectors go to safe mode PREPARE - LHCb subdetectors go to safe mode PREPARE -Detector goes to safe mode IMMINENT (sent ~ 3 minutes before the dump) READY READY BEAM MODE = BEAM DUMP Once DUMP is done OK STANDBY VETO Notes: 1. From UNSTABLE BEAMS to BEAM DUMP do handshake whenever is possible, i.e. if not an emergency dump 2. We question the need of the beam mode BEAM DUMP WARNING, the experiments don’t need it, handshake is enough. It may disappear from the MODE diagram 04/09/20096 R.
