Roman Beginnings Legend says that Rome was founded by twin bothers Remus and Romulus Legend says the twins were raised by a wolf. The twins founded Rome by the Tiber River. The Tiber River helped Rome trade with civilizations around the Mediterranean Sea, the river also helped to protect Rome from enemies. Rome’s main enemy was Carthage. Hannibal was the military leader of Carthage who crossed the Alps with elephants to attack Rome. Rome fought three Punic wars against Carthage for control of the area around the Mediterranean Sea. After 120 years of war Rome defeats Carthage for good.

Rome at it’s Peak. Augustus Brought order: created Police and Fire departments. Improved the economy also improved how the government worked. Ruled during a time of peace. Ruled during a time called the Pax Romano 2 centuries of peace and prosperity. During this time Rome was known for three things. 1. Great road system 2.Code of Law 3.United a huge empire.

Roman Government Roman Republic Citizens have the right to vote or choose their leaders. Patricians Plebeians 10% Wealthy Romans 90% Farmers Merchants Soldiers Roman Senate The law making branch of government. Dictator Picked by the Senate to run the government in times of emergency for 6 months. The Dictator had complete power. 2 counsels were picked by the Senate to administer the everyday workings of the military and government. Tribunes were picked to protect the rights of the plebeians. If the consuls disagreed with the Senate they could VETO-FORBID A LAW. Julius Caesar/ Famous Dictator

Christianity in the Roman Empire Jesus was born into a Jewish family in Palestine. He lived under Roman rule his entire life. Christianity started after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus. Early Christians were persecuted/punished for their beliefs. Christianity was spread by Peter and Paul. They followed Roman roads around the Mediterranean Sea
