Electronic Voting This is one of the essential issues we need to discuss here * Impacts everyone in society * Technical questions need to be asked!

Voting Machines Why is the government so keen to switch to electronic voting? What voting controversies are you aware of? What are the basic characteristics of the American voting process? What are the basic design principles of an electronic voting system?

Ohio Voting Issues What was discovered about the voting machines used in Ohio? Was this an intended property of the system? What was special about Ohio in the 2004 election? What was the problem with the voting software? Why do voting machines need to produce an audit trail? What does the voting machine company think of this situation?

Ohio Voting Issues What is a VVPAT? Why is the available to the public? What did the study in California warn about? Why are other states less concerned about this? Should they be? Should Ohio change its open records law?

The California E-Voting Study Who is Matt Bishop? What is “DRE”? What does he point out about non-electronic voting? What is his fundamental objection to DRE? What sort of assumptions do DRE manufacturers make? What are his examples?

The California E-Voting Study How did he break into a voting machine? How could you improperly influence the selection of an E-Voting system? What things do we have to trust to know if an E-voting system is accurate? What sort of software is developed in “High Assurance” style? Is DRE? What is his conclusion?

Hackers vs Voting Machines What sort of things did hackers do to the e-voting machines? Is it realistic to give the hackers full access to the design documents and source code? Were the vendors cooperative? Were attacks over the Internet or directed at the physical machine? Did anyone exploit flaws in non-Vendor code? What did the vendors think of this review? Do you think physical security would prevent these attacks?

Voting Machines * What sort of things might cause problems with accuracy? * How can we make sure voting is anonymous? * What makes voting in the US so complex? * What is "scaling"? * Should speed be a factor in selecting a voting technology?

Voting Machines * What are some of the errors that can take place on an optical scanning machine? * How is voting different from an ATM transaction? * What is DRE? * Why is DRE a problem? * How do we know that electronic voting is a "success"? * What is an "audit trail"?

Voting and Slot Machines * How does Nevada make sure slot machines are running programs that are "fair" to gamblers? * How do they make sure every slot machine is running an approved program? * How does Nevada make sure machines are not vulnerable to various threats? * What sorts of companies are allowed to make slot machines?

Voting and Slot Machines * Who is responsible for testing slot machines? * Is the testing process public? * What happens when a user believes that a machine is not honest? * How is a slot machine different from a voting machine? * Does a voting machine need all of the same security requirements as a slot machine?

Voting Issues What were some of the issues in the 2000 Florida presidential ballot? Would computer technology have helped the problem? What's an exit poll? How would this serve as a check on electronic voting machines?

Diebold What is Diebold? What community attacked them in 2003? What sort of constitutional issue was at stake? What is HAVA? Do voting machine manufacturers give the states a “money back” guarantee? Why doesn’t Diebold want to show it’s source code to anyone? How was Diebold’s code exposed to the world?

Diebold Was the code stolen from Diebold? What was their mistake in allowing the code to escape? Where did the Diebold memos come from? How did Diebold fight back against the memos? How did the students react? What organization became involved? Was the issue decided in court? How could you argue that it’s OK to violate the copyrights on these memos? What is the status of this issue now?
