Langston Hughes ( ) Please turn to page 461

Hughes was influenced by the music, dance, and intellectual life he experienced while living in Harlem. He quit school and was gaining recognition as part of the New Negro Renaissance. Hughes based his poetry on his folk heritage, blues, and jazz. He is known for his unique depiction of African-American life.

A segregated water fountain.

“Mother to Son” Extended Metaphor You dedicate not one sentence to comparing, but the entire work. Let’s work through it

Louis Armstrong “Wonderful World”

I see trees of green...red roses too I watch 'em bloom... for me and for you And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue... clouds of white Bright blessed days...warm sacred nights And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of a rainbow...so pretty..in the sky Are there on the faces...of people going by

I see friends shaking hands...sayin'.. how do you do They're really sayin'...I love you.
