REDOX Oxidation and Reduction Reactions

Specific Learning Outcomes Define the terms oxidation, reduction, oxidant, oxidising agent, reluctant, reducing agent, spectator ion. Carry put a series of reactions to illustrate oxidation and reduction. Write balanced half-equations and full equations for a range of redox reactions. Recognise and identify the colour of a range of oxidants and reductants and any associated colour changes.

Redox Basics An oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction is any reaction involving the transfer of electrons. In all redox reactions, oxidation and reduction occur at the same time. Oxidation is the loss of electrons and Reduction is a gain in electrons. Oxidising agents (oxidants) are themselves reduced, reducing agents (reductants) are themselves oxidised. Level 3 Chemistry Theory Workbook page 5 Complete (a-e)

Redox reactions Revision In this practical you are going to revise the basic principles of oxidation and reduction reactions and practise writing half-equations and full redox equations. Level 3 Chemistry Practical Workbook page 40 Complete experiments 3-5 Teacher Demonstration Experiment One

Redox reactions Extension In this practical you are going to investigate less familiar redox reactions. Level 3 Chemistry Practical Workbook page 43 Complete experiments 3, 8, 9 and 10 Teacher Demonstration Experiment Six
