Countable Nouns Countable nouns are easy to recognize. They are things that we can count. For example: “book". We can count books. We can have one, two, three or more books. 1. Countable nouns can be singular or plural: My cat is playing. My cats are thirsty. 2. We can use a/an with countable nouns: A cat is an animal. 3.When a countable noun is singular, we must use a word like a, an/the/this/ my with it: I want an apple. (not I want apple.) Where is my mug? (not Where is mug?)

Countable Nouns Countable nouns are easy to recognize. They are things that we can count. For example: “book". We can count books. We can have one, two, three or more books. 4.When a countable noun is plural, we can use it alone: I like apples. Dogs can run fast. 5.We can use some and any with countable nouns: I've got some books. Have you got any pens? 6.We can use a few and many with countable nouns: I've got a few dollars. I haven't got many pens.

Uncountable Nouns Uncountable nouns are things that we cannot divide into separate elements. We cannot "count" them. For example, we cannot count “bread". We can count “a loaf of bread" or “slices of bread", but we cannot count “bread" itself. 1.We usually treat uncountable nouns as singular. We use a singular verb. For example: This news is very important. Mathematics is a science. Your luggage looks heavy. Money isn’t everything. 2.We do not usually use the indefinite article a/an with uncountable nouns. We cannot say "an information" or "a music". But we can say a "something" of: a piece of news (not a news.) a bottle of honey (not a honey.) a grain of wheat (not a wheat.)

Counting the Uncountables Some nouns are only used as plurals such as; bellows, binoculars, clothes, earrings, glasses, gloves, goggles, jeans, pants, people, pincers, police, scissors, slippers, spectacles, stairs, trousers, tongs. These scissors are for cutting paper. Your clothes are dirty. Have you seen my glasses? I want to read the newspaper. She ran up the stairs and tore the door open.
