When I walked to school, I noticed i had left my notebook at home You left your notebook, before you walked to school. So, Had left -> Past Perfect (happened first) Walked -> Past (happened next)
Past perfect continuous I had been walking for ten minutes when I tripped over a stone. Here you were already walking when you tripped. So again, Had been walking -> Past Perfect Continuous Tripped -> Past (happened while walking)
