Do Now: Take out your notebook and a pen. Good morning! Do Now: Take out your notebook and a pen. Good morning! Aim: What are the SLC’s at A & D? Mr. Spaterella Jan. 5

SLC ‘Small Learning Communities’ There are 4 Academies at A & D. 1. Freshman Academy: Located on the 5 th Floor 2. Graphic Design/iIlustration Academy: Located on the 4 th and 5 th Floors 3. New Media Academy: Located on the 4 th and 7 th Floors. Film and Video, Digital Photography and cartooning and animation. 4. Architecture, Fashion and VE Academy: Located on 2 nd, 3 rd and 7 th Floors

SLC What are the purpose and the goals for the creation of SLC’s? 1.To create a community where all students in majors share the same teachers to create an environment where teachers and students know each other. 2.This enables teachers to track their students’ progress not only in their majors, but also in the academic classrooms. 3.SLC’s join forces to meet the needs of the students and to monitor progress to allow timely graduation.

SLC 4. The students have a specific day for tutoring to strengthen skills where needed (Wednesdays) 5. Students have the same guidance counselor for their three years in their major. This allows students to get to know their guidance counselor who can create a more personal pathway for each student. 6. It allows teachers to plan together and to strengthen curriculum and communication amongst colleagues.

SLC How can you describe the effect SLC’s have in the school? S: Smaller Groups, Similar Interests, Student Centered, Improved Student Outcomes L: leadership amongst students and teachers; individualized learning objectives for all students C: Creative collaborative curriculum, Communication between parents, teachers and students
