Gum recession is very common problem. As more & more people retain their dentition into old age the incidence of cervical caries seen in day to day practice in bound to rise. While abfraction cavities must be field with composite only, cervical caries can be field with GIC or composite. GIC is preferable in geriatric dentistry. However in this case composite was used since the anteriors were involved & patients salivary flow & oral hygiene were satisfactory. Excellence in General Dental Practice series by Dr. Veerendra Darakh INTRODUCTION Patient name : Mrs. Sumira D

These cavities on the central inscisors were caused by gum recession & the patient was not flossing. Patients age was 65 yrs. There was no relevant medical history. Oral hygiene was satisfactory altho the patient was not flossing. The patient is expected to maintain proper oral hygiene and report regularly for dental examinations. Excellence in General Dental Practice series by Dr. Veerendra Darakh

Caries is extending on distal surface also of the left central incisor. Excellence in General Dental Practice series by Dr. Veerendra Darakh

While most cases of cervical caries must be filled with GIC, sometimes they need to be restored with composite. Composite has to be used in case if the cavity is very small and where esthetics is required. For application of GIC more tooth structure has to be removed. Excellence in General Dental Practice series by Dr. Veerendra Darakh

Caries removed from the distal surface. A small round bur was used. No undercuts were prepared. For filling GIC undercuts have to be prepared and this would lead to loss of tooth structure. Excellence in General Dental Practice series by Dr. Veerendra Darakh

Final restorations. Immediately after curing of surface sealants Excellence in General Dental Practice series by Dr. Veerendra Darakh

Patients was instructed regarding brushing & flossing. she was asked to report every six months for follow-ups. Such cases can be seen in plenty in any dental practice. Restoring cavities at the initial stages is one of the best service you can offer to your patients. Regular follow-ups are required to check for secondary caries etc. Excellence in General Dental Practice series by Dr. Veerendra Darakh CONCLUSION
