Review Who is Gonzalo? How is he involved with the garden?

Making Predictions for Leona Listen as Ms. Edwards reads portions from Leona’s chapter. On your paper, write down what you think will happen next. Example: ▫1. I predict that Leona will not want to have a garden now that she sees all the trash in the lot.

1.“There was a man standing and watching from the sidewalk and a girl looking down out a window. There were probably lots of folks who’d want to grow something, just like me. Then I studied all the trash on the ground. The garbage was piled high as your waist.”

2. “This wasn’t a job for no wheelbarrow. This was a job for the telephone.”

3. “I kept working on it the next day. That Citizens’ Information Center told me to call the Public Health Department. They sent me to someone else. They are all trained to be slippery as snakes.”

4. “I walked into the Public Health Department. The receptionist just told me to sit down with the others waiting. I did. Then I opened the garbage bag I’d picked up in the lot on my way.”

After Reading Directions: For each of your predictions, say yes if it came true in the chapter, or no if it did not come true. Then give the page number in the chapter that proves it correct or incorrect. In the evidence column, say what happens on that page to prove your prediction right or wrong. Example: ▫1. I predict that Leona will not want to have a garden now that she sees all the trash in the lot. PredictionWas it true? Yes or No Page # that proves your prediction correct or incorrect Evidence 1 No 26 Leona calls all of the city government to try and have them clean the lot so that she can plant a garden.

Homework Directions: Leona listens to Miles Davis while she makes phone calls to try and clean the lot. Why do you think she listens to this music? Do you like the music? Do you think listening to Miles Davis helped her? How? What music do you listen to when you need to stay clam and relaxed?
