EVOLUTION NOT REVOLUTION

What is e learning? “E-learning refers to the use of information and communication technology in the delivery of education and training.” edna.au What is flexible learning? “Flexible learning, which includes e-learning, is about the learner deciding what, where, when and how they learn.” edna.au

WHAT IS A.C.E?

Once, long ago, culture revolved around the spoken word.

Writing and reading was first developed in Mesopotamia about 6,000 years ago.

About 500 years ago, orality was overthrown by technology. Gutenberg’s invention of metallic movable type elevated writing into a central position in the culture

In the West, we became people of the book.

Schools did not always have classrooms organised as we see them today. The modern classroom with rows, raising of hands, class periods, etc, were first introduced in Prussia in the 1770s.

In the early 19 th century, teaching with actual “objects” became popular. In France Oberlin produced “flash cards”, in Italy Montessori had children play with special materials designed to teach.

Over the past 150 years various “objects” of the audio visual nature have been added to the classroom

Now a new distribution-and- display technology is nudging the book aside… We are becoming people of the screen.

E-learning is the latest technology in a long line of “extensions” to our ability to teach/learn

Potential advantages of E-learning CHOICE LEARNER CENTRED FLEXIBLE Learner controlled Supports social and community cohesion interactive Supports networking, collaboration accessible Self paced Supports various learning styles When Where How

We have seen a shift in education from knowledge retention to knowledge acquisition. Increased access to technology and the resulting influx of online learning opportunities have contributed to this move from an industrial model of teacher-centered instruction to a more learner-centered, collaborative model aimed at community building. In this way, technology can be seen as a new medium for construction of meaning rather than a vehicle for information acquisition. elearningmain.htm elearningmain.htm Trends in education
