Once, long ago, culture revolved around the spoken word.

Writing and reading was first developed in Mesopotamia about 6,000 years ago.

About 500 years ago, orality was overthrown by technology. Gutenberg’s invention of metallic movable type elevated writing into a central position in the culture

In the West, we became people of the book.

Schools did not always have classrooms organised as we see them today. The modern classroom with rows, raising of hands, class periods, etc, were first introduced in Prussia in the 1770s.

In the early 19 th century, teaching with actual “objects” became popular. In France Oberlin produced “flash cards”, in Italy Montessori had children play with special materials designed to teach.

Over the past 150 years various “objects” of the audio visual nature have been added to the classroom

Now a new distribution-and- display technology is nudging the book aside… We are becoming people of the screen.

E-learning is the latest technology in a long line of “extensions” to our ability to teach/learn

We have seen a shift in education from knowledge retention to knowledge acquisition. Increased access to technology and the resulting influx of online learning opportunities have contributed to this move from an industrial model of teacher-centered instruction to a more learner-centered, collaborative model aimed at community building.
