1 Timothy 6:2b-5 Ben Hein For Greek Exegesis Dr. Jeon

Translation Teach and encourage these things. If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not devote himself to the healthy words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching in accordance with godliness, he is conceited, understanding nothing, but instead he has sick cravings for debate and disputes about words, out of which is produced envy, discord, reviling slander, suspicion, wicked evil and constant friction among the corrupted minds of men who are being deprived of the truth, believing that godliness is a means of gain.

Brief Survey Four themes One main theme: exhortations against false teachers and their doctrine

Contextual Analysis The Role and Character of Timothy Timothy was a prominent member of Paul’s missionary team Timothy was not a scrub Timothy is trusted by Paul to remain and teach in hostile situations

Formal Analysis Passage as a Self Contained Unit Simple imperative-indicative structure The indicative segment has a conditional statement with a clear protasis and apodosis

Formal Analysis, Cont’d Repetition of Shared Words and Ideas Inclusio with verses 6:20-21

Detailed Analysis “Teach and encourage these things.” What are the ‘things’ Paul keeps reminding Timothy to teach? Some scholars have here argued that Paul is commanding Timothy to teach the words of the preceding verses on the subject of slaves honoring their masters (Knight, Walvoord, Zuck) Timothy is being reminded to teach all of the words of Christ, not just the subject of the previous passage.

Detailed Analysis “If anyone teaches another doctrine” This is the protasis to the conditional statement The use of the word τ ὶ ς The verb ἑ τεροδιδασκαλε ῖ, literally meaning to teach other doctrine

Detailed Analysis “and does not devote himself to the healthy words of our Lord Jesus Christ” What does it mean to devote oneself to the healthy words of our Lord Jesus Christ? “Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness” (verse 11) Fruit of the Spirit listed out in Galatians 5 ὑ γιαίνουσιν

Detailed Analysis “he is conceited, understanding nothing” This is the apodosis resulting from the conditional statement in verse 3 The verb τυφόω should be recognized as the same word used in verse 3:6, “He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.” Perfect tense

Detailed Analysis “but instead he has sick cravings for debate and disputes about words out of which is produced envy, discord, reviling slander, suspicion, wicked evil and constant friction” Relates to the works of the flesh in Galatians 5 Progression of thought

Detailed Analysis “among the corrupted minds of men who are being deprived of the truth” This statement is the conclusive result of the characteristics of the false teachers. Perfect tense
