UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH/ ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS (AUA) THE UNIVERSITY SECTOR : BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT Graham Galbraith Vice-Chancellor, University of Portsmouth

A CHANGING SECTOR

IMPACT OF CHANGES New emphasis on students Students as customers? Is a degree value for money? Students/Parents interested in outcomes?  KIS  DHLE  League Tables  Student Experience Surveys and Social Media

THE TRANSFORMATION IS YET TO HAPPEN Competition not yet in evidence Impact of data (KIS, DHLE) not yet clear Social Media impact only beginning The ‘Good Times’ for funding over, with no price competition YET OIA hit headlines!  10% increase in complaints  29% - too few contact hours  20% - unhappy with teaching

OUR RESPONSE IS CRUCIAL Act as one university: one body of staff Students as customers and partners Need to demonstrate VFM  Efficiency  Focus on quality interactions  Consider the whole student experience Why choose us? What is our proposition?

SHAPING OUR FUTURE Need to be purposeful in all we do Need to have a USP A Brand and Reputation that matches  League Tables  KIS  DHLE and other measures of success

YOU HAVE THE ANSWERS You understand the issues: – Why do we do it that way? – are we sure this is achieving the desired outcome? Be prepared to innovate – reduce unnecessary tasks Take balanced risks Focus on the outcomes WE NEED TO BE PREPARED TO CHANGE
