When Jonah first arrived at Waterloo Road he had been chafing under the restrictive bonds of home-schooling for some time. Home-schooled by doting parents who accept him for who he is, Jonah is always authentic. Unlike Jess he is comfortable in his own skin. It’s this that really attracts the ladies but as his relationship with Jess proved last term, Jonah’s maturity can also make attachments with his peers difficult. When Jonah finds himself comforting Cesca after a brutal dog attack at the start of term it’ll be the start of a new love secret love affair. For Jonah this is the perfect woman, funny, kind, beautiful and whilst Cesca struggles under the implications of what they’re doing, Jonah never questions it. Always brought up to fight for what he believes it right, that’s exactly what he’ll do but as things get ever more serious and the possible consequences become all too real, Jonah’s going to need all his maturity to see it through.
In Jonah’s case he speaks well and has a posh accent, but that is due to him being home schooled. When he went to waterloo road you can see him picked up bad speaking habits but compared to other students he speaks well. He has short, almost shaved head so that makes him look working class and he also wears a black waterproof jacket which are associated with chavs.
In Waterloo Road you can tell that Jonah is working class due to an episode where his sister goes missing and you see that he is from a broken family. He doesn't act like your typical working class student as he is well spoken and well dressed, he has also been home schooled all his life and when he goes to Waterloo Road he stands out as being from a higher class as the other students and his sister is stuck up about the fact that she is more intellectual than students two years above her.
In normal episodes we watch it from someone looking onto the scenes point of view, but on episodes where he is the main focus we will occasionally look at the view from his point of view.
Jonah is popular at school and is especially popular with the ladies due to him being a kind and well mannered person. He stands out as being a lot better behaved than the other students, he went out with Jess (pictured below) as he was there for her when she needed someone. He is liked by everyone and never gets into trouble with the teachers, even though he doesn’t act the same as the other trouble makers he hasn’t been bullied for it.
We are supposed to take pity on Jonah when he first came into Waterloo Road as he had been home schooled so hadn't had much chance to socialize with other people of his own age and also his parents are divorced, and in his first days at the school his Dad embarrasses him trying to get him to leave the school, his sister runs away and everyone sees how abnormal his family are. But in later episodes he becomes popular due to his kindness towards Jess in hr hour of need and this got him popularity with the girls. He then becomes involved with his teacher and we all feel bad for him as he’s in love with a teacher and its wrong for her to be involved with a student in that way.
He is not stereotypical of a working class youth as other working class youths in the school don’t value education but he does, he is bright and is doing well at school. He even takes on extra lessons to learn to speak Spanish well. We expect him to be a trouble maker and maybe rebel as he has not been to school before but he settles in and works hard, he is totally different to what you would expect from a young student. He has not acted up to the others at the school.
