Laptop Roll-Out 2016

Prayer Lord, help our sons’ in their work today and tomorrow; give them the concentration they need so that they may listen, understand, learn, have a peaceful mind and may they always remember that Christ is always with them no matter what. Give them the strength and courage to do what is right and use technology wisely. May it become a tool that advances their learning and may your hand guide their studies over the coming years. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Principal’s Welcome Mr Michael NewmanPartnership

During this session Why a laptop What type of laptop Options Costs associated with the program Brief review of polices and procedures General care and operation of Laptop

Why a Laptop? St Mary’s College aims to promote excellence and provide challenging and stimulating learning experiences and opportunities that enable all students to explore and build on their gifts and talents. The College is also conscious of the importance of providing learning experiences which provide our students with the 21 st Century skills, knowledge and values that will ensure a successful transition from school to further training, education and/or the workplace.

Why a Laptop? (cont’d) With this in mind and information from strategic planning community consultation, the College is entering a new phase of our Technology plan with the introduction of laptops for the Year 10 and Year 11 students in Best technology for the task. The iPad is an excellent device, but it is not the best device for some task / learning activities. The laptop allows students to use the device that best suits the task they have been given.

The Laptop : HP 640 Core i5, 14” screen, 8gig RAM, 320Gb HD (7200 RPM), 3 years extended support.

The Laptop It should be noted that the laptop is not as robust as the iPad. It is important that the students look after the device and to give it the due care and attention it requires.

Cost Amount per term –$120 for Year 10 –$180 for Year 11 Year 10 (payment spread over 12 terms) Year 11 (payment spread over 8 terms) Costs included here do not include the technology levy ($30.00 per term)

Repairs Accidental damage to laptop will incur a $ charge. –Students can have their laptops repaired three times at this cost. –After that, they will be liable for the full cost of the repairs. Deliberate / malicious damage will incur the full repair cost.

What happens with the iPad 3 options

Option 1. Payout and retain the iPad This option involves the paying out of the iPad and the transition to the laptop payment program. In this method, you would then own the iPad.

Option 2. Returning the iPad. This option involves returning the iPad to the College. The iPads must be in good working order (no cracked screens etc.) and must include the charger. If these conditions are met, one term’s payment for the laptop will be credited to your account. Students will then transition to the laptop payment program.

Subject Choice Students undertaking or intending to undertake the following subjects must select either Option 1 or 2. –Graphics (Year 10 onwards) –Accounting / Business –Industrial Graphics Studies (Year 11 and 12) –Technology Studies (Year 10 or 11) –IPT, –ITSC

Option 3. Retain the iPad. This option involves the continued use of the iPad as the College device. This includes continuing the existing payment plan. The possibility exists for students to continue to use this iPad through until they complete Year 12, although the College will still maintain control of the device. In the event of failure of the device, a replacement iPad will be provided. This process will attract a fee comparable to the fee being paid at that time. This may mean that they will not be able to keep the device at the end of their time here at the College.

Option 3 - Considerations Difficulty in word processing longer, more complex documents, including graphing Accessing subject specific software ‘age’ and reliability of iPads (4 – 5 years old) Increased costs to take up the Laptop program at a later date.

Polices and Procedures Parents have the unequivocal say over how and when the Laptop is used at home.

Policies & Procedures.. cont Security / Storage School: –In lockers during breaks, sport, assembly –SMC Backpack Transit: –Proper packing of bag – use the appropriate section in the College bag –Care ‘Out and About’: –Hide to ensure theft prevention

Policies & Procedures …cont Restrictions on installing games etc……. –As mentioned previously, students should not install anything that compromises the operation of the device. –They are not to store or install illegal material (including pirated games, software, movies or music on the device. Acceptable use policy etc –All use of the device must conform to the acceptable use policy.

Laptop Preparation for School The laptop must be fully charged at the start of each day –Need to be prepared for learning. Charging or lack of battery cannot be a distraction to learning.

Virus Protection Anti-Virus is installed and managed by the College. Students should NOT install any other anti-virus program.

Illegal Software / Media Games, programs, music, videos etc would follow that existing policy. IF we detect illegal software, games or movies on a laptop they will get an RTC and the laptop will be re-imaged or programs removed.

Caring for your Laptop Carrying your laptop Packing away your Laptop Careful in car and on bus Cleaning the screen Putting bag down AC adapter

What if I have a question? Please ask the question. – - –Call the College –IT Help Desk –Ask a teacher or a friend Cannot assist with an issue if we do not know about it

Software The College invested significant cost and time in ensuring that the software provided meets the needs of the students. Students will have local administrator access to install printers and other peripherals, but they should not install anything that interferes with the normal operation of the laptop.

Subjects A laptop is considered a compulsory item for students undertaking studies in the following areas: –Graphics (Year 10 or Senior) –Tech Studies (Year 10 or Senior) –Accounting or Business –Industrial Graphics Studies –IPT –ITSC

WiFi At Home When the Laptop goes home, it is the family’s responsibility to connect it to the home network / wifi
