Horizon 2020 Smart, Green and Integrated Transport The Opportunity Louise Mothersole UK National Contact Point for Transport +44 (0)

What is Horizon 2020? The biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) Emphasis on excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling societal challenges The goal is to ensure Europe – produces world-class science, – removes barriers to innovation – makes it easier for the public and private sectors to work together in delivering innovation.

The Three Pillars of Horizon 2020

Smart, Green and Integrated Transport The specific objective of the Transport Challenge is to achieve a European transport system that is resource- efficient, climate and environmentally friendly, safe and seamless for the benefit of all citizens, the economy and society

Specific Programme Activities Resource efficient transport that respects the environment Better mobility, less congestion, more safety and security Global leadership for European transport industry Socio-economic and behavioural research and forward looking activities for policy making

Transport Programme Structure and Budget for 2016/2017 Transport Work Programme – Mobility for Growth €210m/€225m – Automated Road Transport €64m/ €50m – European Green Vehicle Initiative €78m/ €128m – SME Instrument €58m/ €61m – Other Actions Clean Sky 2 Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) SESAR JTI Shift2Rail JTI

Types of Calls (known as Actions) Research and Innovation Action Innovation Action Coordination and Support Action

Research and Innovation Action (RIA) Action primarily consisting of activities aiming to establish new knowledge and/or to explore the feasibility of a new or improved technology, product, process, service or solution. For this purpose they may include basic and applied research, technology development and integration, testing and validation on a small-scale prototype in a laboratory or simulated environment. Projects may contain closely connected but limited demonstration or pilot activities aiming to show technical feasibility in a near to operational environment. Three different legal entities from three different qualifying countries required for each proposal Low Technology Readiness Level Funded at 100% of Direct Costs for all applicants plus additional 25% of Direct Costs to cover Indirect Costs

Innovation Action (IA) An action primarily consisting of activities directly aiming at producing plans and arrangements or designs for new, altered or improved products, processes or services. For this purpose they may include prototyping, testing, demonstrating, piloting, large-scale product validation and market replication. Higher Technology Readiness Level Three different legal entities from three different qualifying countries required for each proposal Funded at 100% of Direct Costs for all non-profit applicants (e.g. Higher Education, etc) plus additional 25% of Direct Costs to cover Indirect Costs Funded at 75% of Direct Costs for all for-profit applicants (ie businesses including SMEs) plus additional 25% of Direct Costs to cover Indirect Costs

Coordination and Support Action (CSA) An action consisting primarily of accompanying measures such as standardisation, dissemination, awareness raising and communication, networking, coordination or support services, policy dialogues and mutual learning exercises and studies, including design studies for new infrastructure and may also include complementary activities of networking and coordination between programmes in different countries. Minimum of one legal entity from one qualifying nation but essentially need to be very many more to be succesful Funded at 100% of Direct Costs for all applicants plus additional 25% of Direct Costs to cover Indirect Costs

What does Direct Cost mean? Actual personnel cost, ie salary plus employers NI contribution and pension contribution NOT charge out rate or anything that includes overhead or fee Cost of material purchase required Cost of subcontractors if these are ‘shrink-wrapped’ off-the-shelf type products and services that can be competed through open tender or similar
