Edgewood Ward 7 JUN 2015 Dan Eliason, Assistant Ward Clerk AUDIO FILES on SEARCH FAMILY

WITH THE NEW TECHNOLOGY, WE CAN EASILY ADD A WEALTH OF INFORMATION TO OUR FAMILY HISTORY Document any family moment Recitals Graduations Reunions Memorials Old photos and documents Stories, jokes, and sayings Recording options: Pictures (new live shots or old photos and documents) Sounds (new live audio or existing tracks) Text (new with keyboard or cut and paste)

MEMORIES on FAMILY SEARCH OPENING PAGE File Types Photos.jpeg.jpg.png.tif.tiff.bmp up to 15MB StoriesType (or paste) into FamilySearch template Documents.pdf.jpg.tif.bmp.png up to 15MB Audio.mp3.m4a up to 15MB

From the opening page, click on Memories and pull down to Audio.

CREATING NEW AUDIO FILES Use anything handy to record the sound of the person talking. Your cell phone might work fine. Try to have a quiet background. Have specific questions to get them started. Favorite horse, when did you first meet your spouse, how old was Bubba when he died? Practice a bit to ensure the speaker can be heard. Many of us older folks can’t enunciate too loudly. Note: Don’t worry too much about the above. It is more important to get the speaker to “just tell the story” rather than make a perfect presentation. Extemporaneous comments are often better than ones that are overly structured.

CONVERTING AUDIO FILES Older file Types (WAV, WMA, AIFF, AU, PCM) must be converted to mp3 or m4a. Ways to convert files 1.Cheap way: If it is already digital: Put the old file into your computer, download a free converter and run the file. If it is on tape or CD: Play the file into your computer through the microphone. 2.The medium price, medium techie way: Buy a Cassette Tape-to-MP3 Converter ($50 to $90) 3.Sure, expensive way: Take it to a converter store: ~$29/hour.

If you don’t have an old cassette tape player, buy one for $5 at Desert Industries. Get an adapter cable with a male headset jack on both ends (about $7 at Best Buy?). Plug one end into the cassette player, the other end into the computer microphone connection. Open up the Sound Recorder on the computer, press Start Recording and then press Play on the cassette player. EXAMPLE OF “CHEAP” WAY TO CONVERT AUDIO FILES

WHAT TO DO NOW? If you recorded the file by the previous method, it should have copied directly into the mp3 format. If not, there are a number of free converter programs available. The FamilySearch file size limit is 15MB so you may need to trim the file down. You also may want to cut out blank spaces—or simply divide the file into segments for posting in different places. There are many free Cut/Trim programs. Chrome is associated with one that seems easy to use. Using a browser, log onto

1. Click on the Open file button and navigate to your desired file. 2. Move the slider arrows to encompass the section you want to save, then press Cut. 3. They confuse us a bit here by calling the save function Download. But it does just that, downloads your trimmed file and saves it wherever you designate. You then associate the audio file to people just as you do with photos.
