ABBREVIATIONS (TUESDAY/WED) Identify abbreviations commonly used in a health care setting

WHAT ARE ABBREVIATIONS: -ARE SHORTENDED FORMS OF WORDS, USUALLY JUST LETTERS EXAMPLE: AM-MORNING PM-EVENING -Abbreviations are used in many health fields and health care settings: doctor offices, medical centers, hospitals. -Doctors use abbreviations on a daily basis, they do not write out everything. Majority of the time almost all orders and prescriptions has abbreviations on them.

WHY IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW ABBREVIATIONS: USED ON A DAILY BASIS IF YOU ARE A NURSE YOU WILL HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO READ THEM TO THE PATIENT AND EXPLAIN WHAT THE MEDICINE IS AND WHY THEY ARE BEING PRESCRIBED THAT. IF YOU ARE A DOCTOR YOU NEED TO KNOW ALL ABBREVIATIONS, WHAT MEDICINE YOU ARE GIVING. IF YOU ARE A PATIENT, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO READ YOUR PRESCRIPTION BEFORE TURNING IT INTO THE PHARMACY PHARM- WILL HAVE TO BE ABLE TO TRANSCRIBE WHAT THE DOCTOR WROTE
