What makes an exceptional Teacher School leader School?

Aspiring Middle Leader Programme

Course objectives Provide opportunities to gain leadership experience Participate in regular professional dialogue about your leadership Deliver a project linked to the school’s development priorities Provide opportunities for career development Build leadership capacity in the school

Session objectives Identify our leadership priorities as a group Clarify how our course will support the school’s development priorities Begin the process of deciding on a project to work on over the course of the next 12 months

What is effective leadership?

Impacting on others to bring about change

“This is a culture that is very hostile to complacency… We have an itch that what we just accomplished … is never going to be good enough to sustain us.” A quote included in Jim Collins, Good to Great

“When you turn over rocks and look at all the squiggly things underneath, you can either put the rock down, or you can say, ‘My job is to turn over rocks and look at the squiggly things,’ even if what you see can scare the hell out of you.” A quote included in Jim Collins, Good to Great

Where are we now? You have been given a set of documents: July 2015 learning walk Sixth form learning walk Overview of QA activities SDP headlines Exam results Hopefully you have bought your faculty SDP too Use these documents to agree a response to this question: What do you see as our leadership priorities this year?

We will use Kotter’s theory of change to help us plan our projects Remember you have been given some broad success criteria for your projects Remember good project etiquette

Project success criteria Something that will last for a year or so Something that will raise attainment and close gaps Something that will fit in with the school’s SDP Something that fits in with your faculty’s SDP If a pastoral project, something that is clearly linked to a significant group of students Something that is focused and clear Something that will have measurable outcomes Something that relates to an area of interest or aptitude that you have

Next steps… Finalise your project using the Kotter model (45 mins work max) it to me by Monday 16 th November We will then match you to a coach 26 th November – Models of Leadership with Jill Baker
