Plants have 3 organs: 1. Leaves 2. Stems 3.Roots Draw the picture and Identify Structures.

LEAVES 1. Site of photosynthesis- chloroplasts in top layer of leaf. 2. Site of gas exchange- stomata in underside of leaf

STEMS 1. Provide structure for the plant 2. House vascular tissue –A. Xylem- tissue that draws water and minerals up from roots –B. Phloem- tissue that distributes sugar from leaves to rest of plant

ROOTS 1. Anchor plant to ground 2. Absorb water and minerals from soil

Plant Reproduction Plants have male and female reproductive parts.

Female reproductive structures The pistil -consists of the: 1.Stigma 2.Style 3. Ovary (contains the ovule, or plant egg)

Male reproductive structures The Stamen –consists of: –1. Anther –2. Filament –3. Pollen (plant sperm)

Plant Genetics Pollen is the male plant sex cell, or GAMETE. The Ovule is the female plant sex cell, or GAMETE. Gametes are HAPLOID- meaning that they each contain half the genetic material necessary to produce offspring. After fertilization, a genetically complete organism is formed, with all the genetic information necessary for survival and reproduction.

Fertilization Plant fertilization and seed distribution is carried out by insects, wind, and animals.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts O 2 is released and CO 2 is absorbed through the stomata
