Question: Diffusion and osmosis are both vital to cell function. Describe the similarities and differences between the processes of diffusion and osmosis. Similarities: Molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. Neither osmosis or diffusion require energy and are considered passive transport. Differences: Diffusion happens when any kind of molecule moves from any area of higher concentration to any area of lower concentration, but osmosis refers only to the diffusion of water across a semi-permeable membrane, such as a cell membrane.
