Protect Yourself While Helping Others

Cholera is a disease caused by the Vibrio Cholerae bacteria that attach to cells lining the intestine wall. Soon after it produces toxins that interrupt the normal cellular processes. What is Cholera

Cholera affects both children and adults alike (exclusively breastfed babies are not affected) Transmission of the disease is typically linked to insufficient and poor water and waste management. It is found in underdeveloped and low-income peri-urban slums, refugee camps, and places without sanitation requirments Who Does it Effect

“Researchers have estimated that every year, there are roughly 1.4 to 4.3 million cases, and 28,000 to 142,000 deaths per year worldwide due to cholera”. (WHO, 2015)

About 80% of all reported cases can be effectively resolved with oral rehydration salts if treated within a timely fashion. The other 20% will develop acute watery diarrhoea If not treated Cholera can cause severe dehydration which can lead to death What cause Fatalities

Try to use only bottled, boiled or chemically disinfected water when- Drinking Brushing your teeth Washing face, hands, dishes, fruits and vegetables Avoid raw foods Fish Fruits and vegetables (peel if eaten) Unpasteurized milk and milk products Prevention

Use latrines and bury your feces Vaccines are also important. There are currently 2 pre-qualified oral cholera vaccines. Prevention cont.
