Gleanings from the Pentateuch The Book of Numbers: Part Two Numbers 26-36

Book of Numbers Two Major Sections: 1. Numbers 1-25: “first generation” census and preparations for the march to Canaan subsequent failure and judgment 2. Numbers 26-36: “second generation” census and preparations for Canaan subsequent failure or success?

Book of Numbers New Beginning (Numbers 26-36) New census – God’s faithfulness New leadership – Joshua and Eleazar New issues of land inheritance Renewed emphasis on proper worship

Extravagant Worship Prescribed Offerings these were regular, ongoing offerings that followed the calendar (“appointed time”) these were expressions of worship – “a soothing aroma”

Extravagant Worship Prescribed Offerings  schedule (appointed times) Daily – every morning & evening Weekly – every Sabbath Day Monthly – first day of every month Yearly – in conjunction with the feasts Culminated in the Feast of Booths – a great celebration

Extravagant Worship Prescribed Offerings  one year total (minimum): 1086 lambs 113 bulls 32 rams & 24 goats One ton of flour 1000 bottles of oil and wine

Extravagant Worship Significance 1. The Centrality of God in All of Life Every day begins and ends with worship of God Time is ordered by and a gift from God Rest/worship is the goal of life

Extravagant Worship Significance 2. The Necessity of Atonement for Life  Atonement through substitutionary death was the basis of all worship Displayed the enormity of the offense of sin against God Displayed the greatness of His grace in providing a means of substitution

Extravagant Worship Significance 3. The Dedication of One’s Life to God Costly sacrifices were to be expressions of the worshiper’s heart attitudes The grain offerings symbolized the worshiper’s gratitude and consecration to the Lord

Extravagant Worship New Covenant Application  We offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Christ Every aspect of life is to be a spiritual act of worship – inward experience of the heart Our life itself is a “living sacrifice” to be used and “poured out” in service of the Lord
