WHERE AM I ???

The purpose of the OSSSA is to operate as a sporting agency for the secondary schools in the Otago region with the goals of providing access and opportunities for all secondary students to participate in sport, provide opportunities for elite performers to fulfil their potential and to facilitate participation all types of sporting events (Otago Secondary School Sports Association, 2010). The Otago Secondary Schools Sport Association acts as the management committee of the Otago Regional Sports Director and his assistant.

In this Seminar My Internship Goals Link my Internship to Physical Education Show what I have done Explain what I have learnt about my specialist area Explain my own skill development

My Internship Goals Organise and run a sports tournament Gain new skills in sports administration Learn about what the Otago Secondary School Sports Association (OSSSA) is involved in Help out at a range of events where possible

How does my internship relate to the area of Physical Education in schools ? A broad education through a balanced curriculum covering essential learning areas. Priority should be given to the development of high levels of competence (knowledge and skills) in literacy and numeracy, science and technology and physical activity National Education Guidelines Co-curricular physical activity This is opportunities for physical activity that occur within a school yet outside of curriculum time. It could be before and after school, at playtime and lunchtime, and in short breaks between planned learning activities. Any physical activity opportunity can be valuable, those that are spontaneous and unstructured as well as those that are planned and organised. Co-curricular programmes in schools may include organised sport in which students have the opportunity to participate and compete. Ministry of Education. (2007). PASSION “The SPARC Sports Ambassadors Programme aims to inspire young athletes and provide them with skills that support their involvement in sport from the school environment through to adulthood.” Passion is the most important thing a person wishing to be successful can have If you have passion everything else follows Passionate people are fun to be around Passion = Energy = Motivation

School Leavers Sport Forms 70% of kids who participate in sport drop out between 13 & 17; 62% of kids who play sport indicate they are likely to drop out of sport Harbour Sport. (n.d.). “These experiences, in turn, allow learners to develop skills and amass job experience which gives them an edge on the competition for initial employment upon graduation.” - Results revealed no significant differences in short- term learning between the two classes; however, the experiential class experienced no significant difference in quiz scores over time, while there was a significant decrease in the scores of the lecture class over a 6-week period. These findings indicate that the key difference in the two learning methods is the students' retention of the concepts over time. - Specht, L. B., & Sandlin, P. K. (1991). The differential effects of experiential learning activities and traditional lecture classes in accounting. Simulation and Gaming, 22(2). SOME SITUATIONS Sitting in on meetings Working as part of a sports administration team Learnt about ice hockey and soccer Making the draw (4x)

My Personal Skill Development POSITIVES Have been able to build relationships and future contacts Better at taking constructive criticism Better at being on time Better at thinking on my feet Gained new sports administration skills IDENTIFIED THINGS STILL TO WORK ON Want to improve my technological skills (especially computer skills) Need to change my address

Investigation of whether the introduction of school sports co-ordinators at Primary and Intermediate levels would be a positive move for New Zealand I have identified a major gap in primary and intermediate schools that is putting strain on teachers and meaning some students are not receiving potential opportunities in sport and recreation. Through a cluster school approach I have identified a possible way of the future for New Zealand by having Primary and Intermediate sports co-ordinators working with students in co-curricular physical activity for the overall benefit of our country in the future.
