Division of Information Technology Information Technology at the University of Maryland Welcome!

Division of Information Technology Overview of Information Technology on Campus The Division of Information Technology (formerly the Office of Information Technology or OIT) plans, develops, supports, and maintains computing, networking, and telecommunications services for the University of Maryland community. This includes classroom instructional technology, online course management, 24-hour computing labs, , wired and wireless network access, and the Terrapin Technology Store.

Division of Information Technology Information Technology Support on Campus The first point of contact for information technology support is the Help Desk, located in Room 1400 of the Computer and Space Sciences Building (Green glass, next to football practice fields). Phone Number: Fall hours are: Walk-In Support: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Phone Support: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Website: There are other campus services and systems as well for which there are alternative support resources. The Help Desk will attempt to assist with these services or point the patron in the right direction for support.

Division of Information Technology Computer Labs and Printing on Campus There are at least 23 computer labs on campus, some of which are open 24 hours a day. Four of the labs are operated by the Division of Information Technology, while the division collaborates for imaging and licensing purposes in the others. Students use Terrapin Express account funds and their Directory ID and password to authenticate and print in labs on campus. Full equipment and software information tables are available at: Information about printing on campus and instructions for printing from a personal computer to a division computer lab can be found at:

Division of Information Technology Students Should Bring These Items to Campus: Personal computer or tablet device if desired. Bring the discs that came with the computer and any software installation discs as well. Make sure the computer is equipped with anti-virus software. The Help Desk recommends Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows and iAntiVirus and ClamXav for Apple. A working lock for the computer or device and a case. A standard Ethernet cable for wired dorm connections. These can be purchased at the Terrapin Technology Store in the Stamp Student Union.

Division of Information Technology Students Should Bring These Items to Campus: Flash drives for moving smaller files between devices. External hard drive for backups and large file storage. Try newegg.com or amazon.com for the best prices. Printer (USB connection only; wireless printers will not work.) Many printers do not come with USB cables and you may need to purchase separately. These items, especially an Ethernet cable and external hard drive, can be invaluable when a computer starts malfunctioning or when wireless networking issues occur.

Division of Information Technology Project NEThics and Acceptable Use Guidelines Project NEThics promotes responsible use of information technology through user education and policy enforcement. Project NEThics also responds to claims of misuse of university computing resources. The Acceptable Use Policy can be read at File sharing without permission of the copyright holder is a crime under the U.S. Copyright Act. Copyright infringers can be sued for the copyright holder’s statutory damages (from $750 to $30,000 or more per work infringed). Make students aware that their actions have consequences and that peer- to-peer file sharing on campus should be avoided. Dozens of Maryland students have been threatened with lawsuits by the RIAA and out-of-court settlements have been reported as costing up to $4,000.

Division of Information Technology Academic Computing for Terps (ACT) The Terrapin Technology Store is currently located on the ground floor of the Patuxent Building, Room It will move to the ground floor of the Stamp Student Union, Room 0203, when the fall semester begins. Apple and Dell computers are available at a discount to students at Computer prices include four year warranties. Dell warranties cover manufactured problems and accidental damage. Apple warranties cover manufacturer’s defects only; they do NOT cover accidental damage. You will need to purchase third-party coverage for that purpose. The new iPad and accessories are available at the Terrapin Technology Store. For more information, please call or visit
