The mailman was delivering a letter one Thursday when he noticed that the front door was ajar. Through the opening he could see the man's body lying in a pool of dried blood. When a police officer arrived he surveyed the scene. On the porch were two bottles of warm milk, Monday's newspaper, a catalog, flyers, and unopened mail. The police officer suspects it was foul play. Who does he suspect and why?

LATERAL THINKING Solution The police officer suspects the newspaper delivery person. The absence of Tuesday's and Wednesday's newspaper indicates that the delivery person knew there was no one there to read it.

Crime Lab History  First police crime lab in the world was established in France in 1910 by Edmond Locard  First police crime lab in the U.S. opened in 1923 in Los Angeles  The Scientific Crime Detection Lab was founded in Evanston, Illinois in 1929  The first FBI crime lab opened in 1932

Crime Labs Later characterized by rapid growth due to – Supreme Court decisions in the 1960s placing greater emphasis on scientifically evaluated evidence – Accelerated drug abuse – Initiation of DNA profiling 350 public crime labs exist at federal, state, county, and municipal levels

Major Federal Crime Laboratories 1.FBI – largest crime lab in the world through Department of Justice 2.Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) – analyzes drugs seized 3.Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) – analyzes alcoholic beverages, weapons, explosives 4.U.S. Postal Inspection Service – crimes involving the postal service 5.U.S. Fish and Wildlife

Analyze the Evidence Process all collected evidence Lab sends results to the lead detective, who fits the results into the crime scenario.

The lab results can: Show how reliable are any witness accounts. Establish the identity of suspects or victims. Show suspects to be innocent or link them with a scene or victim.
