Classification Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Aves Order: Accipitriformes Family: Accipitridae Genus: Haliaeetus Species: Haliaeetus leucocephalus

General Info Size: 28-40 in. tall Wingspan: 1.8-2.3 m Weight: 5.5-15lbs. Migration: Not all eagles migrate, they fallow food, so as lakes and rivers freeze they travel south They don’t hibernate or estivate Special Feature: 8-10 times better eyesight then humans for hunting, very sharp and strong talons and beak There are about 9,789 nesting pairs in the lower 48 states according to the most recent study

Habitat Prefers habitats near seacoasts, rivers, lakes, and other large bodies of water

Diet and Reproduction They are carnivores and they eat fish, rabbits, hares, raccoons, muskrats, beavers, deer fawns, grebes, alcids, ducks, gulls, coots, egrets, and geese They have internal reproduction and have oviparity They do take care of their young and have a lifetime mate unless one dies

Human Impact The use of DDT made adult eagles have a calcium deficiency that made their eggs too brittle We lessened our use of DDT and the population has since risen They have been removed from the endangered/threatened list
