Objectives: You will be able to… Explain and give examples of how cultures change Describe ethnocentrism Agenda: Open Notes Quiz Chapter 1 Section 4 Review Begin Ch. 1 Study Guide Homework: Chapter 1 Test Monday- begin working on Study Guide and/or Flash Cards

Causes of Cultural Change Many forces can change how people live and thus change their culture – New technology – Environmental changes – New ideas- developed within a group or through exposure to another group’s ideas (cultural diffusion) 3

Cultural Diffusion The movement of customs, traditions, or ideas from one place to another Can occur through trade, migration, communication, and force Causes changes in culture 4

Tradition and Change For thousands of years, cultures changed slowly…BUT the pace of change has quickened! – Why? – Positive and negative effects? 5

Understanding Other Cultures People’s own culture affects how they think about other cultures Leads to ethnocentrism- judging other cultures by the standards of one’s own culture – Examples of ethnocentrism? (video)(video) – How ethnocentric are we? 6

Avoiding Ethnocentrism “Always look for the up side” – i.e. there MUST be a positive aspect to every cultural practice for someone; – OTHERWISE, the culture wouldn’t be doing it “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. If [people] can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” -Nelson Mandela 7
